It always amazes me how God leads me to surprising little "aha!" nuggets when I least expect it! Our church had its first "Bloom" ladies' conference last weekend, and I nabbed a book written by Friday night's keynote speaker, Candace Payne entitled Laugh it Up! Her topic for the evening was Joy, so I was glad to see that her book addressed just that: Joy. And, yes, God made me very aware why I had to read this selection, and it was very timely for this widow!

"You see, when Comparison calls, Joy doesn't answer the phone. I cannot tell you just how many times I was empty of joy ( genuine joy) from my life because I was too busy comparing myself to others. When we compare, ultimately we fall short somewhere. Joy knows this That's why she doesn't even entertain the thought."

Wow. Yes!

How often do I compare my life now, to my life "then"?! Compare the life "we" had, to the life of "it's just me again, Lord." Like the Israelites longing for the savory meals of Egypt, and losing sight of all God's provisions, presence, and protection. Ouch!

Gratefulness can't coexist with discontent. Choosing to be thankful for the blessings God has brought into my widow journey opens my heart to consider it joy. And there's no comparison to the peace of God that guards and protects my heart when I choose Joy.
