So what are you doing for Christmas?
"So what are you doing for Christmas?"
(Translated: I know you are alone. How will you be not-alone for Christmas?)
"Are you going out of town or will you be with family for Christmas?"
(Translated: Are there people who you'll be spending Christmas Day with?)
I have so much gratitude for gracious and kind folks who look out for me, those who are aware that widows tend to spend time alone and that holidays can be a challenge. Memories of the hustle and bustle of planning, shopping, decorating, and wrapping. Maybe the empty nest years came when adult children began creating their own traditions, as we adapted to new roles, giving grace to what we release to the next generation. There were two of us still.
But when loss came along, suddenly we realize aloneness. As a widow, we remember past Holidays. We might look around and wish he was there to see the grands playing, growing. We might glance at the chair next to us at the table. We might feel the ache for what was. We may find gratitude for the woven fabric of family we had begun so long ago, the love and investment built over the years.
And knowing this is translated as: God's love was the foundation for what is now. He was with us in those early Christmas mornings. His grace carried us through those harried days of Christmas preparation. His mercies guided tired steps of an overwhelmed mama and overworked dad. His faithful love and kindness smoothed over rattled nerves and shopping frenzies! He was there. And He is still here.
The empty spaces I still expect to see Dan or hear his voice, I recognize my Savior is here---His Almighty Eternal arms under me. And that's why He is Immanuel. "...and they will call His name Immanuel. Which is translated 'God is with us.' "(Matthew 1:23)
For this widow, that Presence is priceless. Every day, all year, holiday after holiday, He never leaves nor forsakes. I can whisper His name at 3 AM and know He is a prayer-conversation away. He is Defender and Champion of the widow. Psalm 68:5
(Translated: Strength)
Casting all you cares upon Him, because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7
(Translated: Peace)
He is still God with us.
Merriest Christmas.
